Oh hell yeah. Its that time of year again. Shit, I don’t even know how many times I have written about this over the years, but it looks like its needed once again.
See all you parents and players chasing the spring and summer team camp circuit are buying a lot of snake oil. That’s right, your buying something with no proof that it ever works. Better yet, your busing something that’s proven to NOT WORK in most cases.
So, here are some signs that you are buying snake oil;
One team tells you to cancel a camp registration you have already committed to and paid for. Yep, anyone that tells you to do that only wants your money. If they really wanted you, they would figure out a way to get you to another camp that didn’t conflict with your already scheduled camp. Pull your heads out of your asses people! This is common sense.
One team tells you to not attend another camp for a team in the same league saying that team is no good. Always a classy move to talk shit about teams in your own league right? See if that team is shitty then the team talking about it is most likely shitty too or they wouldn’t need to talk about the other team in a bad way. Do you really want to play for people who recruit that way?
One team talks bad about another team at the same level but in another league. Nothing says I am afraid of my competition more than people having to go negative on other teams who are competing for the same player. Maybe comparing results is the right way to compare teams? You know, like results of players actually moving up?
Here’s a great one though. When one organization talks poorly about another organizations “sanctioning body”!
For all you dummies who don’t get it, “Sanctioned” means they are covered by a group “Insurance Policy”. It has nothing to do with scouting. AAU, USAH, Hockey Canada, any other country or Independent doesn’t freakin matter. “Sanctioning” is not representative of quality of any organization. Just because you can afford to buy a Rolex on your credit card doesn’t mean you can afford a Rolex. “Sanctioning” is something that’s paid for, not something that’s given to any organization because they are “special”.
Stop buying bullshit labels and stop buying snake oil. Its not hard to figure out which is which. If a team wants you they will never have to do anything negative to get you, and they will never have to “sell” you anything because the program sells itself.
