The Death Pool – Someone Please Stop Tier III Expansion

Yeah okay, I know I am going to get a lot of crap for saying this, but does the United States really need more Tier III pay to play junior hockey teams?

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.  Ya feel me people?

So, we can sell someone a franchise, and we can add a team to our league, but should we?  Has any league administrator actually sat down and asked themselves that question?

I mean really, if you just look at how many teams across the country that didn’t have enough players to fill their rosters, any normal person would say that expansion doesn’t make a whole lot of sense right now.  It wasn’t too long ago people were crying about how watered down Tier II hockey had become.  If that’s the case Tier III must be as watery as the freakin Atlantic Ocean!

Do we need 200 or more pay to play options?  Yep, that’s where we are headed, 5000 Tier III Junior Hockey players!

Does anyone believe that this country has 5000 players that are legitimate Tier III hockey players?  Does any owner or league administrator really believe that scouts are going to get out and watch that many teams?

What’s hilarious is when you look at some of these rosters and see kids that got cut from high school or midget AA teams playing a regular shift and producing points.  Come on man!

Look kids, not every hockey player is good enough or entitled to play junior hockey.  If no one else wants to tell you this, let me be the one.  Just because you got the money to pay to play doesn’t mean you should.  Just because you have the money to buy a franchise doesn’t mean you should, and it doesn’t mean you will be able to fill your roster with paying players.

There is only one Tier II league in the US and that’s the 24 team NAHL.  Do you honestly think they are watching every player on every team in every league?  Come on kids you’re smarter than that aren’t you?  Think the Canadian Junior A teams are watching every player on every team in every league in the US?  They have their own Junior B and Midget AAA teams to watch.

There are not enough Tier II or College opportunities for all these players.  So someone has “some splaining to do Lucy”!  All these teams promising call ups and college opportunity cant keep those promises.

Now don’t get me wrong, there are some great Tier III teams that move a bunch of kids on each and every year.  Those are the teams you need to look at if you want to play Tier III and go somewhere.  Some teams don’t judge players correctly at tryouts either, so there’s nothing wrong with looking at a few teams.  But if you weren’t a stud or very reliable player on your last team, what makes you think you should play junior hockey?

If your in it to just keep playing and are not expecting a lot out of it, then that’s cool.  Play on playa!  But don’t think that just because there are more Tier III teams there are more higher level opportunities.

Someone please stop the madness and kill the Tier III expansion, a checkbook shouldn’t be a predetermining recruiting factor!  Just because I can drive a car don’t mean I should be driving NASCAR!
