The Death Pool – Special Report – Hockey Edmonton Bans Checking In House Leagues

Hey kids, hope you’re having a great week.  Its a Twofer Thursday.  Things are getting busy here at the death pool.  All kinds of tips coming in from my Death Cherubs, and I am working on several stories right now.

But I ran across this little tidbit on my own.  Hockey Edmonton has banned body checking from house league play.  The ban will take effect starting with the next season.

Now how is that for a little thought and debate provoking legislation?

Just so we are clear none of this will effect any travel hockey programs.  A, AA, and AAA programs will not be effected at all.  The rule change impacts about 2,200 players in the Edmonton area.

Now keep in mind here kids that Hockey Canada banned checking from all levels of hockey below bantam just a short time ago.  So this move really isn’t such a bold ground breaking move when you look at things, but it sure has some people in an uproar.

Why are they so upset?  Hell if I know.  Its house league hockey people!  Get a freakin grip on yourselves.  If you’re playing house league hockey you are not making the NHL.  If you re playing house league hockey you are not doing anything beyond house league and that’s alright!

So I say, why not ban checking in house league.  It will probably keep more kids in the game who don’t want to risk injury because it could effect the other sports they play.  They don’t want to risk injury because they don’t want to miss school or maybe it gets older kids who left the game to come back to it?

You parents are freakin priceless.  Its house league hockey!!!

I am all for fast and physical hockey.  But if you’re a recreational player, you’re a recreational player for a reason.  The game needs more players not less.  Those recreational players turn into hockey fans, and they go on to have hockey playing kids.  Those children could end up being the next great non recreational player because of the parent who was a recreational player.

Some of these parents, a.k.a. MORONS, need to figure life out.  Checking in house league hockey is not going to make the game any better.  Let the kids play the damn game.  Let them have fun.  If they are good enough, or if they want to they can try to get to higher levels.  But if not, just let them be kids, and just let them play.
