The Death Pool – Special Report – Politicians Killing Teams And Arenas

Yep, here we go again kids.  More news about people who have no clue, and have no business in the business of hockey being put in charge of making decisions that effect young athletes at every level.  The level of stupidity shown by some people seems to have no bounds.

We got us a couple great examples today.  First lets look to the hockey hotbed of Michigan where City of Monroe Council Members and the Mayor have voted to “repurpose” the Multisports Complex based on a $200,000 expense to keep it open.  But it gets better kids.

The City will still spend $80,000 a year to “repurpose” the building simply maintaining it.  Yep, a whopping $120,000 swing.  Hmmmmmm you think some morons at the City Offices did an economic impact study for the arena? No.  They have no clue.

Considering the average family over a 2 or 3 day tournament spends $500 minimum in the community holding the tournament.  That’s money spent in hotels, restaurants, and gas stations.  Twenty family’s per team, that $10,000 per team being spent in the community hosting the event.

Nahhhhh no negative economic impact there folks.  Just take that away from all the other business operations that have invested in the community.

How about the kids?  Not just hockey players either.  Figure skaters and everyone else using the facility.  Just in case the City of Monroe actually reads this, everyone on the Council and the Mayor should be recalled for these actions.  It is beyond irresponsible.

Heading north of the border.  The Delta Ice Hawks of the Pacific Junior Hockey League were informed by arena management that they may not be welcome back.  A twenty year community staple may be pushed to relocation due to ice allocation issues.

Yep, lets just send the boys packing.  Forget the economic impact on the whole community.  Forget that the team is part of the reason there is such a high ice demand because young players aspire to play for the team.  Forget the fact that if the team moves, some of those youth players will likely move with them.

Ohhhhhh snap, lets not forget the new Ice Hawks Owner who purchased the team last year who has been trying to accommodate changes to keep the team in the building.  The same owner who only learned about the decision when contacted by the local press!!!!  Yep, that’s right kids, the people in charge weren’t even going to tell the man who invested in the community!

Got to love politicians.  Got to love red tape.  All the ass kissing that comes with it, and all the non informed decision makers.  Both of these communities should be embarrassed.  Will they be?  Nahhhhh elected politicians don’t get embarrassed, they just get repurposed.
