Hey kids its another beautiful Monday. So, everyone was waiting to see what would happen to the expansion application for the USHL to put a team into Perani Arena in Flint Michigan. Yep, the vote was supposed to take place tomorrow.
But ummmmmm yeah about that vote……
See when the USHL gives you a statement to use at your opening press conference, and you do not use the statement provided to you, its kinda like telling your boss you don’t need a paycheck this week.
TJHN reported that the new Perani Arena ownership was provided a statement from the USHL to use at their initial press conference. But since that statement didn’t exactly lend support to the USHL application, or the likelihood the application would get approved, ownership decided not to use it.
So, when you decide not to use whats provided because it doesn’t further your cause, the people that provide it sure don’t see that as starting out on the right foot.
Turns out that the support for a Flint USHL franchise, wasn’t as strong as it was made out to be. And that limited support all but disappeared when people actually started talking about the hockey demographics. Yep, those demographics, the failure of the minor pro Flint Generals, and the NAHL Michigan Warriors to have success, sure didn’t give anyone confidence in a USHL franchise in Flint.
Its not like smart people didn’t read between the lines either. The fact that the application was “withdrawn” just a few days before the vote tells all we need to know. They were told the application was going to be denied.
So, now its on to making that OHL bid. I wonder how the OHL feels about playing second fiddle to the USHL? \
Whats not being said is that OHL talks were going on before the press conference announcing the USHL in Flint. To say there are serious talks now is not telling the whole truth since talks have always been serious.
Oh yeah, and just so everyone is aware, the December 31st deadline that past for franchise applications to move doesn’t take effect when ownership is changed. The franchise owner is the one who applies to make the franchise relocation, not a potential buyer as reported by some other publication.
Meanwhile the NAHL tenant in Perani Arena has been told they aren’t welcome back next year. Well, at the minimum these new owners sure have some big balls.
Yep. its mid January and things are just beginning to heat up for silly season. This story line is going to carry on for a while.
