Three Dead At Ice Arena In Fernie After Ammonia Leak

The KIJHL’s Fernie Ghostriders are experiencing a state of emergency.

An arena employee discovered an ammonia leak in the refrigeration unit of the Fernie Memorial Arena ice making system at approximately 5:00 am.

Soon after, emergency service workers were brought in to fix the issue.  Some time during the day, while those repair efforts were under way three workers were overtaken by ammonia gas, and killed.

The area around the arena has been evacuated, and a local state of emergency has been declared.

TJHN will update this story as more information becomes available.
