Thursday Highlights: Vanacker’s third period pair leads Bulldogs to comeback win

Brantford Bulldogs 3 at North Bay Battalion 2

  • Two third period goals by Blackhawks prospect Marek Vanacker secured the comeback win for Brantford.
  • Nick Lardis scored his CHL leading 42nd goal of the season to open the scoring for the Bulldogs.
  • Briir Long and Parker Vaughan both scored to give the Battalion the lead.
  • Mike McIvor made 25 saves on 28 shots for the Battalion, while Ryerson Leenders made 32/34 saves in the win.
  • Layne Gallacher made his OHL debut for Brantford.

Ottawa 67’s 3 at Barrie Colts 5

  • A second period goal by Brad Gardiner secured the in for the Colts against his former club.
  • Dallas Stars prospect Emil Hemming got things started for the Colts just four minutes into the game.
  • Both teams traded-off on goals throughout this one, with Frankie Marelli getting the 67’s on the board, and Kashawn Aitcheson giving the Colts back their lead in the second period.
  • Cole Beaudoin scored two goals, while Hemming and Aitcheson both had a goal and two assists.
  • Barrie outshot Ottawa 38-27.

Brampton Steelheads 4 at Peterborough Petes 3

  • Lucas Karmiris settled this close battle with a goal late in the third period.
  • The Petes came out hot, scoring with two early goals from Jonathan Melee and Colin Fitzgerald to take an early lead.
  • Brampton responded in the second period, with Jakub Fibigr tying the game at two on the power play.
  • Jonathan Melee had a pair of goals for the Petes, while Steeheads captain Porter Martone tallied a goal and an assist.
  • The Steelheads snap a three-game slide, with Brayden Gillespie making 28 saves for the win.

Flint Firebirds 5 at Windsor Spitfires 1

  • New York Rangers prospect Nathan Aspinall buried the game-winner for the Firebirds in the second period.
  • After Anthony Cristoforo got things started for the Spitfires, the Firebirds answered right back—scoring five unanswered to take control and eventually win the game.
  • Maple Leafs prospect Sam McCue scored a hat-trick in the win.
  • Flint’s Nathan Day made 30/31 saves, while Carter Froggett stopped 26/31 at the other end. 
  • The Spitfires loss snaps a string of eight straight wins at home.

Kingston Frontenacs 9 at Saginaw Spirit 5

  • Tyler Hopkins netted the game-winner in the second period, as part of his first OHL hat-trick.
  • Igor Chernyshov had a big OHL debut, scoring his first career goal to get the Spirit on the board in the first frame, and also scoring another later in the second period.
  • The Fronts scored six unanswered goals to take control of the game.
  • Zayne Parekh and Nic Sima kept pushing for the Spirit, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Fronts’ big lead.
  • Tuomas Uronen scored in his ninth straight game.
  • Calgary Flames prospect Jacob Battaglia celebrated a five point night, with two goals and three assists for Kingston.
  • Charlie Schenkel improved to 5-0 since joining the Frontenacs.
