USPHL Advancement In Action: NCDC’s Bulls Call Up Vernal’s Alanko and Pohjala

The NCDC’s Pueblo Bulls recently welcomed to the team Roni Alanko and Kasper Pohjala, the top two scoring leaders for the Premier’s undefeated Vernal Oilers (28-0 to date). From Helsinki, Finland, Alanko and Pohjala’s impact on the Oilers’ success and promotion to the Bulls highlight the USPHL’s dedication to providing a clear pathway to success in junior hockey and beyond.

Alanko and Pohjala are just two of 95 Premier players who have also seen time up at the NCDC so far in 2024-25!

Both forwards began their first season at the Premier level this year, with Alanko playing 18 games and Pohjala 19. They quickly established themselves as offensive standouts, earning points in nearly every game. Pohjala leads the Oilers with 54 points, while Alanko follows closely with 52 points. With three games apiece under their belts in the NCDC, the pair are starting to make their mark at the higher level.

“Roni and Kasper came to Vernal with the goal of using their time at the Premier level to showcase themselves within the NCDC,” said Vernal Oilers General Manager David Imonti. “They held up their end of the bargain and were highly sought after. We couldn’t be prouder of the boys, and everyone back in Vernal is cheering them on.”

Alanko scored his first NCDC goal for Pueblo on Dec. 14 against the New England Division’s Boston Dogs, and fittingly, it was assisted by his Oilers teammate Pohjala!

Imonti acknowledged the bittersweet nature of losing players of their caliber, albeit briefly, but highlighted the depth and talent of the current roster.

“We have a special group this season, and our staff has anticipated multiple NCDC promotions,” he said. “With our proximity to NCDC West clubs, we’ve prepared for moments like this and have plenty of talented players ready to step in and fill the gaps without missing a beat. This is a luxury not many Premier teams have, and we’re very fortunate to be in this position.”

Alanko and Pohjala’s advancement to the NCDC is a testament to the league’s goal of preparing players for the next level, inspiring others in the Premier Division to strive for similar opportunities in the NCDC.
