Denis Barrette has been involved with hockey on the North Shore for decades. A former player at Merrimack College, Denis served as head hockey coach at both Haverhill High School and North Andover High School hockey. Along the way he has also mentored scores of junior hockey players from New England, including at Johnson & Wales University in Providence. He joined the VJW coaching staff as head coach of the Junior B team during the 2011-12 season.

A grand jury indicted Barrette earlier this month following a lengthy investigation.  The allegations first surfaced in 2012, from a former relative through marriage who said that while living with Barrette, he repeatedly molested her, telling her it was a “precious little secret.”

A second victim, related to the first victim also told investigators that Barrette had sexually abused him during his childhood, telling the boy that “It’s just locker room behavior,”

Judge John Lu set bail at $5,000, ordered Barrette to surrender his passport, and set a condition of his bail that he not coach any children under 16.
