Wegleitner scores twice as Gold Miners edge Canadians

CHELMSFORD, Ont. – Gunnar Wegleitner notched his first two Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League goals, which included the game-winner, as the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners edged the Rayside-Balfour Canadians 4-3 Saturday night at Chelmsford Arena.

The recently acquired Wegleitner picked up his initial NOJHL point with an assist on the game’s opening tally supplied by Matthew Brassard five minutes into the contest.

Rayside-Balfour countered quickly with the equalizer as Cayse Ton scored on the power play at 6:23.

Kirkland Lake tacked on two more before the first period was complete however as Brandon Carr-Ansah and Wegleitner struck 46 seconds apart to put the visitors up 3-1.

Ian Robbie’s 11th of the campaign brought the home side back to within one at 7:08 of the middle stanza, but Wegleitner answered that 1:20 later with the eventual difference maker.

Jordan Spadfore’s first with 98 seconds remaining in regulation made it interesting late, but the Gold Miners held on from there to secure the road victory.

Tyler Fyfe chipped in with two assists for Kirkland Lake in the triumph while Kyle Liinamaa helped set-up all three Rayside-Balfour markers.

Allan Menary made 27 saves to record the win for the Gold Miners with Owen Johansson facing 36 shots in defeat for the Canadians.
