WHL Power Rankings: Week 21

For the first time this season, we’ve got a tie in the WHL Power Rankings.

The Medicine Hat Tigers and Spokane Chiefs came out with the same score in the voting and league staff argued for about 20 minutes with no real conclusion.

But just because we couldn’t decide who gets the top spot this week doesn’t mean you can’t!

T-1. Medicine Hat Tigers
1st Central- 37-16-3-1

Both of our top teams clinched a berth in the 2025 WHL Playoffs on Monday and are 7-1-1-1 in their last 10 games.

Rookie of the Week Jordan Switzer pitched a 22-save shutout against the Regina Pats for his second career clean sheet and Dallas Stars prospect Niilopekka Muhonen scored the lone goal in the first 1-0 game of the WHL season.

Minnesota Wild prospect Ryder Ritchie led the team with a goal and four assists in wins against the Pats and Lethbridge Hurricanes, while project top 2026 NHL Draft pick Gavin McKenna hit 99 points on the season (30G-69A) and stretched his point streak to 32 games.

Keep an eye on Nashville Predators defensive pick Tanner Molendyk, who enters Friday’s tilt against Edmonton with 149 career points.

T.1 Spokane Chiefs
2nd U.S.- 37-16-1-1

The Chiefs did fall to Tri-City in the shootout on Friday but bounced back with regulation wins over the Ams and Kamloops Blazers.

As for the most dangerous line in the second half of the WHL season?

Captain and Seattle Kraken prospect Berkly Catton won Tempo WHL Player of the Week with nine points (1G-8A) in three games, while Washington Capitals up-and-comer Andrew Cristall potted eight points (4G-4A) to retake the WHL scoring lead and become the first player to break the century mark this season with 104 points (39G-64A) in 44 games.

Spokane kicks off another home-and-away set against the Americans on Friday.

3. Everett Silvertips
1st U.S.- 39-10-4-3

The banged-up Silvertips came out with a strong performance against the B.C. Division’s best, splitting a pair of matches with Prince George before edging Victoria in a 3-2 nailbiter.

Calgary Flames prospect Eric Jamieson led the pack with four goals on the week, which was highlighted by a rare defenceman hat trick to down the Royals.

Raiden LeGall was also named first star with 27 saves and an assist in a 3-1 win against the Cougars.

Exceptional status defenceman Landon DuPont continues to lead the rookie scoring race with another goal and assist under his belt, and Carter Bear is chugging along with 39 tallies to sit third in the league goals race.

4. Calgary Hitmen
2nd Central- 35-15-3-2

They’re so back.

The Hitmen locked down a return to the WHL Playoffs after a one-year absence in style, with Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Tanner Howe recording an assist in a shutout win against his former team, the Regina Pats.

Calgary dropped slightly this week after stumbling against the Prince Albert Raiders and Saskatoon Blades to start an East Division swing but bounced back with wins over Swift Current and Regina.

Howe was +3 against his former club and put up a goal and assist in his hometown of Prince Albert.

Team scoring leader Oliver Tulk continued his career-best run with three goals and two assists, while active WHL wins leader Dan Hauser snagged his 14th career shutout.

5. Victoria Royals
1st B.C.- 32-25-3-6

Victoria is the fourth and final team to clinch a playoff berth this week.

The Royals claimed three of a possible four points against the Vancouver Giants before coming up just short against the Silvertips.

Captain and Utah Hockey Club prospect Justin Kipkie set a new record for career goals by a Royals blueliner with his 35th goal and veteran Teydon Trembecky went off for three goals and three assists.

Next up, the Royals host the Cougars for a pair of weekend matches, with Prince George trying to claw its way back to the B.C. Division lead.

6. Brandon Wheat Kings
1st East- 30-16-4-3

The Wheat Kings have seized the East Division lead and jumped up to sixth in the Power Rankings after going 8-0-1-1 in their last 10 games.

That run includes a major 5-2 win over Prince Albert to leapfrog the Raiders in the standings and wins against Saskatoon and Moose Jaw.

Five Brandon players tallied at least six points on the week, with 2025 NHL Draft-eligible Joby Baumuller leading the way with five goals and two assists.

The Wheat Kings have quietly become the sixth-highest-scoring team in the league while allowing the sixth-fewest goals.

They’ll take centre stage in next week’s Wednesday Night in the Dub matchup as they host the Edmonton Oil Kings.

7. Prince Albert Raiders
2nd East- 31-19-3-1

The Raiders rolled Swift Current, Calgary and Moose Jaw before falling to Brandon, so they’re still a riser this week.

Captain Justice Christensen racked up four goals and two assists (including a four-point effort against the Warriors) to tie for the league lead in goals by a defenceman (20) and seal his 94th career point.

Seattle Kraken prospect Lukas Dragicevic and upstart rookie Daxon Rudolph padded their stats with a six-point week as the three blueliners combined for seven goals.

Stick taps are also in order for alternate captain Niall Crocker, who surpassed 150 career points with a three-goal week.

8. Prince George Cougars
2nd B.C.- 31-17-4-2

Top 2025 NHL Draft-eligible netminder Joshua Ravensbergen was a high point for the Cats as they split against the Silvertips, saving a combined 58 of 61 shots for a .950 save percentage.

But the Cougars couldn’t build on the momentum in a tough loss to the Giants in the lower mainland.

Los Angeles Kings prospect Koehn Ziemmer and alternate captain Borya Valis registered five points (1G-4A) each and Minnesota Wild prospect Riley Heidt picked up two points to sit at 348 in his career.

Needless to say, this weekend’s set against the Royals will be a huge one.

9. Lethbridge Hurricanes
3rd Central- 34-19-2-1

The Hurricanes are gusting with a little less force these days as they work through some injuries, but they can still snap a three-game slide and clinch a playoff berth as soon as Friday night.

Shane Smith played hero with the overtime winner against Regina in Lethbridge’s lone win of the week.

Captain and Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Noah Chadwick piled up three assists on the week while suiting up for his 200th career game.

Kooper Gizowski also popped off for four goals and three assists, while Winnipeg Jets prospect Brayden Yager matched his seven points with a goal and six helpers

The Canes can confirm their trip to the playoffs with a win against Kamloops on Friday combined with a Red Deer loss to Saskatoon.

10. Edmonton Oil Kings
4th Central- 30-20-2-2

When you’ve got 10,000-plus fans packed in for a special Paw Patrol game day, you better deliver.

That’s exactly what Edmonton did as they slipped by the Hurricanes with a 4-3 result. The Oil Kings split their other games against Red Deer to keep pace in the playoff race.

St. Louis Blues prospect Adam Jecho led his team with two goals and three assists, while sensational rookie Lukas Sawchyn chipped in a goal and four helpers to sit third in the rookie scoring contest.

Captain Gavin Hodnett is on a six-game heater and Florida Panthers pick Gracyn Sawchyn is back in the lineup as the Oil Kings steel themselves for two big tests against the Conference-leading Medicine Hat Tigers this weekend.

11. Saskatoon Blades
3rd East- 29-18-3-4

Ahead of this week’s Wednesday Night in the Dub match, Calgary Flames prospect Hunter Laing said anyone on the Blades could play hero on any given night.

This time, it just so happened to be him.

The 6-foot-6 forward scored twice to down Lethbridge and claim five of a possible eight points on the week.

Saskatoon beat Central Division heavy-hitters Calgary and Lethbridge and fell in a shootout to Swift Current and Brandon in regulation.

Veteran Grayden Siepmann scored and picked up two assists to hit 100 career helpers against his former squad, the Hitmen.

The good news for fans? After facing Red Deer on Friday, the Blades and Hurricanes will meet for the final time in the regular season on Tuesday.

12. Portland Winterhawks
3rd U.S.- 30-20-2-1

There’s a lot to love about the Portland Winterhawks this week with an overtime win against the Wenatchee Wild and a split against the rival Seattle Thunderbirds.

Philadelphia Flyers prospect Carter Sotheran cashed in three assists versus Wenatchee, while Captain Kyle Chyzowski, Josh Zakreski and Alex Weiermair all put up six points over three games.

Diego Buttazzoni’s 28th goal of the season stood as the game-winner in a tight 4-3 win against the T-Birds and Seattle Kraken prospect Tyson Jugnauth piled up three assists to hit 97 in his WHL career.

Montreal Canadiens prospect Tyler Thorpe will also look for his 50th career goal this weekend as Vancouver tussles with Kelowna.

14. Tri-City Americans
4th U.S.- 28-22-4-1

The Ams soaked one regulation loss to the Chiefs but came out on top with two shootout wins against Spokane and Kelowna.

Rookie Cruz Pavao dazzled with his one-on-one moves in both shootouts and another first-year player, Savin Virk, was a huge difference-maker with six points (3G-3A)- including the game-tying goal against the Rockets and the shootout winner against Spokane.

The tilts against the Chiefs were so entertaining, they’ll do it again this weekend!

15. Swift Current Broncos
4th East- 28-23-1-1

The Broncos were tamed by the Raiders and Hitmen but brought the drama in a 10-round shootout against the Blades.

Buffalo Sabres prospect Scott Ratzlaff was named WHL Goaltender of the Week after winning eight of his last nine appearances, logging his eighth career shutout and putting up an insane .971 save percentage on the week.

Eight different T-Birds found the back of the net, including Matej Pekar, who lit the lamp three times.

Projected 2025 NHL first-round pick Radim Mrtka also added three more helpers.

The towering 6-foot-6, right-shot defenceman leads Seattle in scoring in the new year with 19 points (1G-19A) in his last 18 games.
