WHL Power Rankings: Week 23

It’ll be a race to the finish line with just over two weeks remaining in the 2024-25 WHL Regular Season.

1. Medicine Hat Tigers
1st Central- 42-17-3-1

The Tigers have clawed their way back to the top of the pile after going 9-1-0-0 in their last 10 games and getting close to closing the gap against Everett in the race for the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy for the WHL’s regular season champions (we know the Silvertips have games in hand, don’t @ us).

Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Harrison Meneghin and standout rookie Jordan Switzer swapped shutouts against Brandon and Regina, with Switzer coming up just shy of setting a new franchise record for shutout streak (minutes) after posting three straight clean sheets.

Captain Oasiz Wiesblatt scored three times this week to hit 30 on the season and move up to eighth in the WHL scoring race while sitting on 96 career goals.

Plus, the Ruck twins combined for four goals and three assists with Liam breaking the 20-goal mark in his rookie campaign.

2. Calgary Hitmen
2nd Central- 39-15-3-3

Calgary’s point streak is up to 6-0-0-1 as the team chases history in net.

WHL Goaltender of the Month Daniel Hauser has tied a WHL record with four straight shutouts and has a shot at breaking three league records (consecutive shutouts (games), longest shutout string (minutes) and wins (regular season)) as the campaign winds down.

No pressure.

Captain and San Jose Sharks prospect Carson Wetsch has also become the third Hitmen skater to hit 30 goals on the season after netting a hat trick against the Kelowna Rockets.

The Hitmen will try to gain ground on Medicine Hat for the division and conference lead as they host Swift Current on Friday night.

3. Everett Silvertips
1st U.S.- 42-11-4-3

Back-to-back sellout crowds = back-to-back wins for the league leaders.

The Tips downed Seattle and Vancouver at Angel of the Winds Arena, with veteran Tyler MacKenzie hitting 30 goals for the first time in his career with the game-winner against the Giants.

Fan favourite Dominik Rymon is right behind him with 28 goals and winger Shea Busch tallied his first three-point game of the season with a trio of helpers against Vancouver.

The Tips are also getting healthier after some unfortunate injuries in the second half of the season and look to get closer to clinching their 10th U.S. Division title with tilts against Tri-City and Prince George on tap.

4. Spokane Chiefs
2nd U.S.- 41-18-1-1

More than 10,000 fans filed into the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena on February 28 to watch Berkly Catton become the fifth player in team history to record back-to-back 100-plus point seasons.

The Seattle Kraken prospect was named WHL Player of the Month after hitting 35 goals on the season and becoming the third player to surpass the century mark.

Spokane did stumble with a loss against Wenatchee, but they’re still in a good spot with WHL goals leader Shea Van Olm two strikes away from becoming the first to 50 in 2024-25.

They’ll hit the road this weekend for a pair of games against our fifth-place team:

5. Victoria Royals
1st B.C.- 36-15-3-6

The Royals are on a 4-0-0-0 heater after snagging back-to-back wins against the Portland Winterhawks.

Tempo WHL Player of the Week Teydon Trembecky put up his third hat trick of the season (he’s tied with Swift Current’s Luke Mistelbacher for most three-goal games) and is now tied for second in the WHL goals race with 42.

Veteran Brandon Lisowsky is also knocking on the 40-goal door and is six points away from hitting 300 in his career.

Victoria only has three home games left in the regular season, including two this weekend against Spokane.

6. Lethbridge Hurricanes
3rd Central- 39-19-2-2

The Canes are another team that’s weathered some injury woes, but they seem to have come out on the other side of it as they chug along on a 5-0-0-1 streak that features wins over Regina and Kelowna and a shootout loss to Brandon this week.

Alternate captain Logan Wormald tallied three assists this week to his 200 career points and Leo Braillard led the pack with two goals and three assists, including the game-tying goal against the Wheat Kings and the game-winning against the Pats.

Five of Lethbridge’s six remaining games will come at VisitLethbridge.com Arena, including Friday’s rematch against the Wheat Kings.

The good news for Canes fans?

Lethbridge has the fourth-best home win percentage in the league (.776) and only trails Prince George (.783), Everett (.790) and Calgary (.828).

7. Prince George Cougars
2nd B.C.- 36-19-4-2

You can tally up three more Ws as the Cougars stretch their winning streak to five games.

Prince George turned in back-to-back defeats of the Blazers before edging Wenatchee on the road.

Washington Capitals prospect Terik Parascak led all skaters this week with two goals and five assists, while Minnesota Wild prospect Riley Heidt and Vegas Golden Knights signee Viliam Kmec put up six points each.

Kmec has passed 50 points on the season to sit fifth in scoring (15G-40A).

Stick taps are also in order for veteran winger Borya Valis, who hit 30 goals on the season and put pen to paper on a three-year, entry level contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs!

8. Prince Albert Raiders
1st East- 34-20-5-1

The Raiders picked up three of a possible six points to become the first East Division squad to clinch a berth in the postseason, thanks to some excellent offensive performances from the blueline.

Captain Justice Christensen is now atop the defenceman goals leaderboard with 22, while Seattle Kraken pick Lukas Dragicevic has two goals and an assist to hit 50 lamp-lighters in his WHL career.

Prince Albert now turns its attention to a rivalry weekend home-and-away against the Saskatoon Blades.

9. Brandon Wheat Kings
2nd East- 33-20-4-3

The Wheaties can punch their playoff ticket as soon as Friday night after a see-saw week that featured wins against Lethbridge and Edmonton and losses to Medicine Hat and Red Deer.

Projected top 2025 NHL Draft pick Roger McQueen is back in the lineup for the first time since October and has an assist and a +3 rating in his first two games of 2025 and veteran Marcus Nguyen added a helper to sit on a picture-perfect 200 career points (100G-100A).

Flyers prospect Carson Bjarnason also shined with 38 saves against Edmonton for a 3-2 win in his 150th WHL game.

10. Tri-City Americans
4th U.S.- 31-23-5-1

The Ams just like playing more hockey than everyone else.

All three of their games this week went to overtime and Tri-City has now had a league-leading 19 matches go to OT or a shootout this season (they’re 13-6 in extras).

And how’s this for a stat? Every single goal projected top 2025 NHL Draft pick Jackson Smith has scored this season has been a game-winner, with three of them coming in the fourth period.

Bonus good news- Savin Virk has been named WHL Rookie of the Month for February and Captain Jake Sloan enters this weekend’s action with 99 career goals.

11. Swift Current Broncos
4th East- 32-25-1-1

We’ve got some more OT magic in the East Division with the Broncos galloping up the standings.

Swift Current has pulled off three straight comeback wins against Moose Jaw, Prince Albert and Saskatoon, including a statement Wednesday Night in the Dub win that saw the Broncos score six unanswered goals against the Blades.

Carlin Dezainde swung big with three goals and two helpers while Seattle Kraken prospect and Captain Clarke Caswell chipped in with another five points (1G-4A).

Next up, Swift Current will try to snap Calgary’s shutout streak as they visit the Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday night.

12. Edmonton Oil Kings
4th Central- 33-24-2-2

It wasn’t Edmonton’s week with one win against the Raiders followed by a pair of losses against Saskatoon and Brandon, but they are in a position to clinch a playoff berth over the weekend.

Sixteen-year-old Kayden Stroeder made the most of his callup with a goal against the Wheat Kings and veteran Marshall Finnie led the group with three goals.

Potential 2025 first-round pick Blake Fiddler also chipped in three assists from the blueline.

Edmonton will need some help from the out of town scoreboard to clinch on Friday, but will try to take care of business on home ice as they host the Kelowna Rockets.

13. Portland Winterhawks
3rd U.S.- 32-24-3-1

Portland bounced back from a pair of losses to Victoria by punching their playoff ticket on Wednesday.

Technically, they qualified with a Wenatchee loss to Prince George, but would’ve sealed it anyway minutes later as the Winterhawks collected a win over Kamloops.

Captain Kyle Chyzowski has a goal and three assists on the week to be the next closest WHL to 100 points with 96 (39G-57A) while Seattle Kraken prospect Tyson Jugnauth added another three helpers to climb to 81 points.

The blueliner is now 15 points clear of the next highest-scoring defencemen, Mazden Leslie and Lukas Dragicevic (66 points).

14. Saskatoon Blades
3rd East- 31-21-3-4

Saskatoon’s lone win of the week came against Edmonton, while the Warriors and Broncos dished the Bridge City bunch high-scoring losses.

Zach Olsen scored twice, including the game-winner, to seal the deal against the Oil Kings, while Tyler Pass, Hayden Harsanyi and Cooper Williams all added three assists over three games.

The Blades are still only six points away from the East Division lead with a game in hand on Brandon and Prince Albert. Plus, all nine of Saskatoon’s remaining games are within their division, setting the stage for a wild finish to the regular season.

15. Vancouver Giants
3rd B.C.- 29-24-8-0

Vancouver clinched a playoff spot while idle on Wednesday night and earned three of a possible six points this week.

Captain Mazden Leslie’s sensational season has continued with another three goals and an assist to sit second on the Giants in scoring and second among all WHL defencemen with 66 points (19G-47A).

Flames draft pick Jaden Lipinski has also been hot as of late with two goals and two helpers in three nights.

Next up, the Giants will head out for a Saturday tilt against the Blazers.

16. Red Deer Rebels
5th Central- 24-28-5-2

Finally, the Red Deer Rebels have cracked the top 16 after a stellar three-week win on home ice.

Ty Coupland scored the shootout winner against the powerhouse Hitmen before scoring a career-best four goals against Kelowna.

Not to be outdone, 2025 NHL Draft-eligible Matthew Gard came up big with his first career hat trick in a key matchup against Brandon.

Captain and Seattle Kraken prospect (fifth one we’ve mentioned today!) Ollie Josephson registered five assists on the week and NHL Draft-eligible defenceman Luke Vlooswyk was named WHL Rookie of the Week with a goal and three helpers.

Playoffs aren’t out of the question for the Rebels, but they’ll need to bear near-perfect down the stretch to extend their season, starting with weekend tilts against the Tigers and Broncos.
