3rd period surge sends Eagles past Canadians

CHELMSFORD, Ont. – The Soo Eagles got a pair of third period tallies to pull out a 3-1 road victory over the Rayside-Balfour Canadians Saturday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League contest held at Chelmsford Arena.

Special teams allowed the visitors to pick up the lone marker of the opening frame as Roman Gaudet collected his eighth of the season at 4:50.

Rayside-Balfour drew level in the latter stages of the middle stanza thanks to Connor Brown’s seventh of the campaign at 16:55.

The score stayed at 1-1 into the final half of the third before Eagles newcomer Chris Murphy notched the eventual game-winner at 11:19 with his initial NOJHL goal in his second contest with the club.

Roger Powers added some insurance for Sault Ste. Marie a couple shifts later as he also picked up his first league tally to round out the scoring.

Cam Bruggrabe made 26 saves to register the win for the Eagles.

MacKenzie Savard faced 36 shots in a losing cause for the Canadians.
