Confessions Of A Junior Hockey Coach – How We All Learn

To be sure many of you are coming back to real life after the labour day vacation.  I hope you are back with the bright eye and ready to learn.

The question is, how do we all learn?

Some may wish to describe teaching tactic at this point, or show different formula and idea.  But the answer is a very simple one.

We learn from mistakes.

We learn from making our own mistake, and we learn from watching other people mistake.  This is the only real way to learn.  It has been this way since the start of time.

How we handle those mistake, and learning moment is what set the intelligent player apart from the player that eventually go nowhere.

When coach correct you in the drill or during the game, how do you respond?  Do you shake you head, roll you eyes, or think “this guy is an ass”?  Or, do you listen, and whether you agree or disagree, simply do what is told?

Coaches can be wrong too.  We all know this.  But when a coach is wrong, even after instructing you to do something one way, will, if he is good coach, change direction and correct his own mistake.  Coach learn from mistake too, therefore he must be allowed to make them as the player is allowed.

It is not only our mistake we learn from, but by watching the mistake of other.  Championship team and high level player are all lead by people who observe first and talk second.

Do not be the player who smash his stick, roll his eye, or act ignorant when making mistake or being corrected.  Be the player that take the criticism and learn.  This is the sign of the coachable player who will one day mature to be the best player he can be.

Do not be afraid to make the mistake, but when mistake made, learn from it.

Games are won by the team, and players who make the fewest mistake nearly 100 percent of the time.  Willingness to learn from mistake is a sign of humility.  Humble people, no matter how good the rest of the world perceive them to be, are always willing to learn.
