Hockey Mom Chronicles – Dealing With Setbacks

Set Backs, we all have them at some point in our lives. When you are an athlete and you have a setback, it may seem like the end of the world or the end of your not even started career.

Our player is experiencing a setback before the season even begins, I feel really sad for my hockey player. He will be out of commission for 8 weeks due to an injury he received during last season. It is just not healing well and he needs a procedure to take care of it. Freaking bad timing! Wish we had learned this back in March. But we were following all the doctors’ instructions, but we knew the procedure may be needed. Unfortunately, it is.

At first our player took the news really hard, thought there was no hope and he would miss the whole season. What hockey player wouldn’t? We are 36 days away to report to his team and he was scheduled to play in Chowder Cup this week. He was really looking forward to Boston and meeting some of his teammates and showing his new coach his playing style. But then the “devastating” news! Devastating, in his mind, but really just a small setback.

I am the type of person that has to have a plan. I think, OK, we got thrown a curve ball, what is Plan B or Plan C. Though disheartening, setbacks can make you even stronger, if you do not give in to the negativity. If you have an injury, as in this case, use it to push yourself even harder. Work what you can during the healing process. Then when the healing process is over and you can get back to playing and working out, use it as a catapult to the top. Show the world you were down but not out! Come back better and stronger. Throughout life we all experience setbacks. It is how you overcome them that makes you stronger. Do not give in to it, do not let it define you.

Once again, hockey shows us how young players learn life lessons at an early age. I think learning these lessons at a young age will help our boys become incredible men. Players learn so much, how to be independent, how to manage their money, how to respect others and it is learned through this amazing hockey journey. Hockey is so much more than a game!

Secretly, I am very nervous about the surgery on Tuesday, but I know it is needed. Our player will work harder to overcome! All we can do as his parents is be his encouragement.
