IceDogs hire NHL alumnus Krys Barch as Head Coach

NIAGARA, ON –  The Niagara IceDogs have officially announced Krys Barch as the club’s new Head Coach, marking a new direction for the organization as it prepares for the 2025–26 OHL season.

An OHL player with the London Knights, playing in 187 career OHL games, a veteran of 381 NHL games with the Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, and New Jersey Devils, Barch brings with him a wealth of professional experience, a deep understanding of the game, and a strong commitment to player development. Since hanging up his skates, Barch has stayed immersed in the sport, transitioning into a Player Development role with the Buffalo Sabres and most recently serving as the Head Coach of the U16 AAA Huron-Perth Lakers. He has spent the last 5 seasons coaching within the Huron Perth Lakers Minor Hockey Association all at the AAA level.

“I’ve always believed in the unifying power of sports,” said Barch. “The IceDogs are more than just a hockey team—they’re woven into the fabric of this community and a true source of pride for the entire region. It’s an honor to be part of the next chapter in their incredible story.”

Barch’s hiring comes as part of a continued effort by the organization to reset its identity and culture. With a focus on accountability, compete level, and innovation, the former NHLer is expected to instill a hard-working, team-first mentality in Niagara’s young roster.

“My deep passion for the game of hockey gave me the opportunity to play at the highest levels,” Barch added. “But I can honestly say that my love for coaching far exceeds my love for playing.”

“I want to thank Frank [Evola], Michele & Darren for believing in my passion and entrusting my ability in leading this group of young men,” he said. “We will be an organization that holds itself to the highest standard—leading with Character and Class, while delivering a high level of Compete and Innovation on the ice.”

“We are super excited to Welcome Krys and his Family to the Niagara Region and begin this next chapter of Niagara IceDogs Hockey,” IceDogs General Manager Frank Evola said.

With training camp just a few months away, preparations are already underway for what the IceDogs hope will be another great season.

“I’m incredibly excited for what lies ahead and can’t wait for this journey to begin!” Barch said.
