Kirkland Lake crowns French River

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – Brayden Stortz scored once and helped set-up two others to aid the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners in their 6-1 win over the French River Rapids Friday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

A Brandon Wolfe power play marker gave the Gold Miners the lead with the lone tally of the opening stanza.

Kirkland Lake broke the contest open in the middle frame as they struck four times in the latter half of the session to go up 5-0 after 40 minutes.

Marc-Antoine Arseneau’s 15th of the season made it 2-0 just past the midway point of the period.

The Gold Miners then recorded three more in rapid succession with Brett Ouderkirk, Logan Fredericks and Stortz all beating French River starter Alec St-Georges.

Blake Anderson made it 6-0 in the third before the Rapids dashed Victor-Olivier Courchesne’s shutout bid with 9:53 remainig thanks to a Quinn Robelle man advantage marker to round out the scoring.

Jamey Lauzon supplied two assists to chip in offensively for Kirkland Lake.

Shots on goal favoured the Gold Miners 52-14 on the night with Courchesne picking up the victory and St-Georges the loss.
