NCDC Commitment Profiles: Islanders Hockey Club’s Powers Excited for Future At UNE

By Alexis Demopoulos

A long-time member of the Islanders Hockey Club, forward Braxton Powers is excited about his advancement to the NCAA Division III University of New England for the 2025-26 season.

Powers, a Raleigh, N.C., native, was a member of the Islanders for four seasons and credits a lot to the organization for helping him become the player he is today. He started back with the club during the 2021-22 season where he played a handful of games. Powers put up 24 points during the 2022-23 season, 38 points last year and had a monster year this season with 68 points (32G, 36A) in 51 games. He is the IHC all-time leader in regular season points at 132 and games played at 149.

Powers was also selected to the New England All-Star team back in January.

“The Islanders drafted me a while back and I can’t say enough good things about the organization, staff, etc,” said Powers. “They’ve had my back since I first got there and have been nothing but supportive through my whole journey. I came back last season to try to make one more push for the championship and although we came up short we had a great group and I don’t regret any of it.”

Powers started talking with the UNE coaching staff pretty early on in the season. There was mutual interest and they stayed in communication all year until he made the decision to sign.

“The coaches at UNE thought my game fit right into how they play with speed and skill, so it just worked out,” said Powers.

Powers was intrigued by UNE right from the start. From the competitive hockey team to the picturesque campus, it was the perfect place for him.

“UNE has a great team and great facilities so that definitely grabbed my attention right away when I went and visited,” said Powers. “The campus is beautiful and the classes had a really nice set up so I’m excited for sure. The campus is also right on the beach and the rink is an amazing facility with the gym and everything else attached to it, so it just seemed like a great place to be.”

Though the Islanders playoff run was cut short, Powers is thankful for his time spent there and now he will turn his focus to working hard this off-season.

“There’s always room for improvement in your game in every aspect,” said Powers. “So over the summer I’ll work on everything just to try and become a better rounded player so that I can hopefully have an impact as soon as I get there.”

The NCDC congratulates Braxton Powers, his family, the Islanders Hockey Club and University of New England for his commitment.
