Powassan crunched by Cochrane in opener

POWASSAN – The unbeaten Cochrane Crunch moved to 3-0 in preseason play after a convincing 9-1 triumph over the Powassan Voodoos Wednesday afternoon in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League exhibition action at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Cochrane took advantage of a Voodoos side that was seeing their first taste of game action in the NOJHL by breaking open a close contest with five second period goals.

The visitors began the scoring with a late marker in the initial stanza thanks to Jacob Erwin’s third of the preseason at 18:52.

Aviv Milner extended the Crunch lead to 2-0 early in the middle stanza while Cody Gratton connected at 8:19 to put Cochrane up by three.

After a man advantage effort, supplied by Brandon Plourde, made it 4-0, Powassan notched their first goal in game action off the stick of Brett Lepisto.

Josh Racek and Erwin then tacked on tallies to put the Crunch well in front after 40 minutes.

Max Glashauser, Gratton and Dustin Deagau then finished off the offensive barrage for Cochrane in the final frame to conclude the day’s scoring.

Racek also doled out a pair of assists to aid the cause for the victorious side.

Matt Young started and went the distance for Cochrane in net and picked up the victory.

Ben Auger suffered the loss between the pipes for the Voodoos while Jerry Scarangella also seeing time in goal for Powassan.

NOJHL preseason play continues tonight as the Abitibi Eskimos host the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners in a 7:30 p.m. start at Jus Jordan Arena in Iroquois Falls at 7:30 p.m.
