Pre Draft Combine Success Story – Sam Wilbur Makes NCAA Commitment

KIRKLAND LAKE – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League champion Kirkland Lake Gold Miners are pleased to announce to more players from this past season’s championship squad will be off to compete and play in NCAA programs in the fall.

Samuel Wilbur, the club’s leading point producer in 2013-14 has committed to attend Westfield State University in Boston while defenceman Ryan Scherer is off to the University of Wisconsin-Steven’s Point.

Wilbur, who hails from Saginaw, Mich., registered 86 points during the course of the regular season and 15 more in the playoffs helping the Gold Miners win their first NOJHL title.

“I would like to thank the Kirkland lake Gold Miners organization and all of my teammates for a great year,” offered Wilbur.

“I’m glad I get the chance to move on to the next level with this opportunity and I can’t wait,” added the forward.

Westfield State is a Division III program that plays out of the Massachussetts State Athletic Conference.

As for Scherer, he is joining the Pointers who play in the Wisconsin intercollegiate athletic Conference.

The Elgin, Ill., product played a solid role on both ends of the ice for Kirkland Lake last season picking up 18 points while also help bolster the squad’s defensive corps.

“I feel fortunate to have played for the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners,” said Scherer.

“It is great how the town is so inviting to the players and backs the team every step of the way. I couldn’t have asked for a better junior hockey experience,” added Scherer.

Meanwhile the reigning NOJHL champs are already busily preparing for the upcoming 2014-15 campaign.

The Gold Miners will be holding an open training camp in New Liskeard July 25-27 at the Don Shepardson Arena.

The cost for the three-day event is $150 dollars and any unattached players interested in trying out can register online at klgoldminers.com.
