Rock win 2nd straight to begin 2016

ELLIOT LAKE, Ont. – The Timmins Rock capped off a positive two-game road trip to open the 2016 portion of their Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League schedule by defeating the Elliot Lake Wildcats 5-2 Sunday night at Centennial Arena.

After winning 6-3 in Chelmsford against Rayside-Balfour Saturday, Timmins kept things going in Elliot Lake notching the lone tally of the opening frame as Jordan Rendle supplied his 22nd of the campaign at 5:41.

The Rock added to their cushion with two more markers in the middle session off the sticks of Devin Panzeca and Andrew Castagna.

Timmins kept coming in the third as they went up by four 3:22 in as Wayne Mathieu collected his eighth of the season.

Elliot Lake got on the board four minutes later as Chad Lopez picked up his ninth of the campaign.

The Wildcats moved to within two with six minutes remaining in regulation as Cole Hepler scored for an eighth game in succession and 20th time overall while also extending a consecutive game point streak to 10.

However, the visitors came right back with some insurance just 62 seconds later to wrap-up the night’s scoring as Aaron Kerr secured the decision for Timmins.

Zachary Kercz had a pair of assists for the Rock to aid their offensive cause as he moved into a tie for third overall in NOJHL scoring with Cochrane’s Dustin Cordeiro and Kirkland Lake’s Brayden Stortz as that trio have 59 points apiece.

Shots on goal in the contest were 35 apiece with Matthew Nixon picking up the win and Al Rogers suffering the loss.
