When you try to fit a square peg into a round hole in junior hockey, you’re simply not going to have success.
Every year, thousands of players set out chasing the dream of playing at the next level without a real plan for how they’re going to get there. Players and parents convince themselves that somehow they’ll be the exception—that they’ll be the one who “makes something happen” or breaks the cycle.
And thousands of times every year, they learn the same hard truth: you cannot change the system simply because you believe you belong in it.
“But I was better than that guy.”
“I was just as good as him.”
“I should have made that team.”
We hear these statements constantly. But they mean very little when you don’t understand how roster building actually works from the coaching side.
Do you really think a coach is going to pass on a 20-year-old veteran with years of junior experience for an 18-year-old with no junior experience simply because the younger player is just as good?
Of course not.
The 18-year-old has to be significantly better—good enough that the coach simply cannot justify choosing the veteran.
That’s the reality of roster construction.
Being “just as good” isn’t good enough. Being close isn’t good enough. And believing you deserve an opportunity doesn’t create one.
As thousands of players now search for homes for the upcoming season, maybe it’s time to put the hammer down and stop trying to force something that simply isn’t there.
Sometimes, the smartest move is not fighting the system—it’s finding the environment where your abilities actually fit.
Because the path of least resistance can often become the path to becoming a dominant player.
And if you aren’t dominating, you’re not separating yourself.
You’re just another number at camp.
