The Death Pool – Keeping Up With The Joneses

Hey kids, I am just a little pissed off today.  My neighbor just bought a new Porsche yesterday and its sitting in his driveway.  I don’t know why he gets to have one and I don’t, but I deserve one just like his that’s for sure.

Sounds messed up huh?  I mean really, I work just as hard, and I just don’t understand why he gets one and I don’t.

Sound familiar kids?  Sounds a lot like, I played with Bobby and he is in the USHL, I should be in the USHL.  I played with Mikey and he is in the NAHL, I should be in the NAHL.

Well guess what kids, you aren’t Bobby and you aren’t Mikey.  There is a reason they are there and you are where you are at.

I write about this now because I am so sick and tired of hearing all the sniveling players and parents who think they deserve to be somewhere they haven’t earned the right to be there.  That’s right kids, you got to earn it.

Sure you might be a good player, and sure maybe Bobby and Mikey got there before you did, but chances are Bobby and Mikey were seen as having more upside, or more speed, or scoring ability, or more size.  But someone saw something in Bobby and Mikey that you just don’t have.  Deal with it, its called life.

Parents and players need to stop trying to “keep up with the Joneses”!  No one cares how you see yourself compared to another player.  Harsh reality right?  Its true.

Maybe you got a bad attitude, maybe your parents are a pain in the ass, maybe you don’t put the time in the gym, maybe you don’t work hard every shift, maybe you aren’t as good as you think you are.

I mean really kids, its time you start looking in the mirror and make an honest assessment of yourself.  Stop letting mommy and daddy tell you where you should be.  If you cant be honest with yourself and where you fit in to the hockey ladder, you will never grow to your full potential.

If your a 5’7″ forward do you really think a team is going to take you over the other 5’7″ forward they already have unless you completely kick his ass at camp?  No, they are not because he got there first and that’s just life.

It doesn’t mean you aren’t a good player if you aren’t at the same level as a guy you grew up with.  It just means someone saw something they wanted in that player that you may not have.  Is it frustrating? Sure it is, but its just life and life’s not fair.

But really, do you all know how bad you sound when you say those things?  No coaches want to hear it, and that could be part of the reason why you aren’t up with Bobby and Mikey.

So yeah anyway I am going to go whine to my buddies now about the neighbors new Porsche, forget the fact that he makes ten times the money that I do and has earned his right to buy it.  Yep that makes sense.
