The Death Pool Special Report – NSHL Leaves AAU

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Snap!  Here we go kids.  The Northern States Hockey League has left the building!  That is if the building is called AAU Hockey or the United Hockey Union.

All the AAU logos are gone from the league and team sites.  Kind of like seeing grandma’s house after all the Christmas decorations are taken down! Ha Ha Ha

Fashizzle kids.  Hey, now I am just as shocked by this as you are, but I am hearing the reason why makes pretty damn good sense to the NSHL teams.

So AAU allows a nice level of import players, and Canadian or United States players aren’t considered imports in any AAU league which I think is awesome.  That’s a new rule for this year, and a great rule that allowed expansion into Canada.

Anyway, a couple other little diddies have come up.  According to NSHL sources, Import, or now non North American players are being required to purchase a supplemental insurance policy.  Yep, supplemental to the tune of $850 per season for each non North American player in any AAU league.

$850 kids!  Are you kidding me?!  So yeah that’s what the NSHL said too.

So ya got your tuition, your billet fee’s, your AAU registration fee’s, and now another $850 for supplemental insurance.  People are asking why this is happening when USA Hockey doesn’t require something like this, and oh by the way, you can buy insurance on your own for a lot less than $850 to cover you while you’re in the United States or Canada.

So ya think this might have something to do with why players aren’t running to the US this season?  Ya think this might be part of the reason why teams are struggling to recruit?

Oh yeah and couple in the $1500 compensation fee any team has to pay for a player who wants to switch leagues within the AAU family and you got yourself a little cash flow problem.  Yep, if you played in the WSHL, ya cant go to another AAU league without the new team paying the compensation.  Who do ya think gets that bill?  Yep you the import player gets it.

So, the NSHL leaves AAU, gets their own insurance, and doesn’t have to pay any compensation for players?  Are you kidding me?  Sounds like a good business decision if you ask me.  Save money and save the players money.  What a novel idea!

So the CIJHL blows up like a freaking atom bomb.  The NSHL leaves, and now AAU nationals will be between the WSHL, MWJHL and the new CIHL.  Yep, go from five league representatives to three.  But at least those three will be pretty damn good.
