On the heals of three team USA members testing positive for the COVID-19 virus, USA Hockey has made the move and canceled the 2020 World Junior Summer Showcase.
Slated to run from July 24 to July 31 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich., the organization announced Wednesday.
USA Hockey had invited 44 American players to take part in the event, which is part of the evaluation process for the squad that will represent the country at the 2021 world juniors in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alta.
“We’re disappointed on many fronts, but thought it was in the best interest of everyone involved to not hold the event,” said John Vanbiesbrouck, general manager of the U.S. national junior team and assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey, in a statement.
“Regardless, we’re excited about the level of talent in our country and look forward to putting a team together that can compete for the gold medal. We’ll continue to look at all options to get our players and staff together ahead of selecting our team.”
The U.S. will be looking to capture its fifth medal in six years at the 2021 tournament.
