Bring on Boston – that’s what Carter Schram is saying now.
The ‘02 native of East Lansing, Mich., is moving from one state capital to another, as he’ll move to the Massachusetts capital to attend Suffolk University and play hockey for the Rams in the NCAA’s New England Hockey Conference.
“I was able to go on a visit and being able to live and go to college in Boston is unreal, but the school atmosphere and being able to get around campus so easily in such a big city was great,” said Schram, who scored 41 points in 38 games for the Rush this past season. “What sold me was the collective of joining Coach Shawn [McEachern, an NHL alum] at Suffolk to build the hockey program in a great conference, and get a great degree while doing so.
“I first started talking with Suffolk after the season had ended in early-April. The coaching staff really liked my ability to play a 200-foot game, my physicality, and my shot,” said Schram. “ I think what interested me about Suffolk is being able to play college hockey right in downtown Boston, as well as the education I could get from Suffolk – their business school is top-notch.”
Schram plans on entering Suffolk University as a Marketing major, and will be hitting the ice alongside 2022-23 Rush teammate Hunter Berry. Together they helped the Rush make it all the way to the USPHL Premier Championship game for the second time in three years.
“I’m excited! He was a great friend and player in Charlotte, and I look forward to the next four years with him at Suffolk!” said Schram about teaming up once again with Berry.
In his second season in the USPHL, after playing for the NCDC’s Twin City Thunder in 2021-22, Schram was extremely happy with his Charlotte Rush player experience and highly recommended them to future players.
“I think Charlotte is an amazingly run organization, and a huge thank you to the entire Rush Staff. The culture and success they had before I joined really sold me, and it was easily the best hockey decision I had made going there this season,” said Schram. “I think the Rush staff do a great job at preparing you for the next level on and off the ice, at and away from the rink. They demanded a lot out of us and held us to a high standard, and I think it pushed us to be better men and better hockey players. Which is why I think the team and myself had the success we had this season, and the reason Charlotte is always a wagon.”
Schram was excited this year to be put into a lot of tough game situations against other teams from outside of the always-tough Southeast Division, and praised the USPHL for providing a fantastic platform for player development and advancement.
“I think the league does a great job at exposure, with the amount of showcases that there are and the social media team, they do a good job of letting us be seen by college scouts,” Schram said.
It’s work time throughout the spring and summer of 2023 to be ready for NCAA hockey, and Schram is happy to put in the reps.
“I’m continuing to work on my explosiveness on the ice and overall strength. I mean I’m going to be playing against guys four years older than me now so everything has gotta be better!”
The USPHL congratulates Carter Schram, his family, the Charlotte Rush and Suffolk University for his commitment.
