Wheat Kings veteran Shipley commits to University of Massachusetts Lowell

Brandon, Man.- Brandon Wheat Kings veteran Luke Shipley has announced his commitment to the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

The 20-year-old is set to join the River Hawks Division I program for the 2025-26 season after closing out his WHL eligibility.

“We’re incredibly proud of Luke and this opportunity he’s earned,” Wheat Kings General Manager and Head Coach Marty Murray said. He’s been a consistent and reliable player for us, and his commitment to UMass Lowell is a great step forward for his development. We know he’ll do well not only as a player but also as a student. His dedication on and off the ice will serve him well in this next chapter.”

Shipley, from Powell River, B.C., has solidified himself as a strong two-way player on the Brandon blueline.

The 6-foot, 186-pound defenceman has 13 goals and 30 assists for 43 points and a +24 rating in 44 contests this season, highlighted by a one-goal, four-assist night in a 7-2 win over the Red Deer Rebels on January 29, 2025.

He leads the team in plus/minus while sitting second in assists.

The Victoria Royals originally drafted Shipley in the sixth round of the 2019 WHL Prospects Draft.

He spent parts of three seasons on the Island before being acquired by the Wheat Kings in a major trade in 2022-23.

Shipley has totaled 34 goals and 92 assists for 126 points in 255 regular-season games.

He’s added another pair of assists in four playoff appearances.

Brandon (23-16-3-2) is 5-5-0-0 in its last 10 games to sit third in the East Division with a chance to move up in the standings over the weekend.

The Wheat Kings are back in action on Friday, January 31 as they visit the Moose Jaw Warriors (10-30-4-2) in a 2024 WHL Playoffs rematch.
