A three-year veteran of the Mercer Chiefs, forward Gregory Diamond feels fortunate for all his time spent in the Chiefs organization and how they helped him achieve an NCAA Division III commitment to SUNY-Geneseo for the 2025-26 season.
Diamond, a West Chester, Pa., native, joined the Chiefs back during the 2022-23 season where he appeared in 18 games and had two points. He returned back the following season, playing in 43 games and contributing 26 points (11G, 15A). Diamond decided to finish out his junior career playing one more season with the Chiefs and he has been on fire this year.
In 47 games played, Diamond has 43 points (21G, 22A) and has been key to their success. He was also chosen as an Atlantic All-Star back in January.
“I have gained friends that are like family to me at Mercer and have met some incredible people in my time here,” said Diamond. “It felt like the right move coming back to Mercer because it was my home being my third year playing for the team and I knew I was going back to a group of guys that would make my last season the best.”
Diamond first started communicating with the SUNY-Geneseo coaching staff around Thanksgiving time and he explained that they really liked that he was “a big player who can throw the body around, skate well and make skilled plays.”
Diamond was drawn to SUNY-Geneseo mainly for their competitive hockey program, but also academically they had exactly what he was looking for.
“The hockey program at Geneseo is second to none when it comes to Division III and they have an incredible track record for winning and developing players to play at the next level,” said Diamond. “Their academic buildings were incredible and Geneseo is a great school all-around.”
When he attended the campus, Diamond instantly felt at home and that is how he knew he wanted to spend his next four years there.
“It felt right as soon as I was on the campus and as the visit went on I kept on liking it more and more,” said Diamond. “They are a top 10 nationally ranked team and had the academic opportunity I was looking for. It was a no-brainer for me to commit to Geneseo.”
Diamond hopes this offseason to continue to get stronger on and off the ice as well as continue working on his complete game. As far as finishing out the regular season, Diamond and his teammates have just one goal in mind.
“As a team we want nothing less than a Dineen Cup and we are going to continue to play our game and work hard to give us a chance to win,” said Diamond.
The NCDC congratulates Gregory Diamond, his family, the Mercer Chiefs and SUNY-Geneseo for his commitment.
